Today the Dallas Stars announced their opening night roster for 10/14 against the Minnesota Wild. A couple of interesting decisions were made by Stars GM Jim Nill to keep Dallas under the cap.
They didn’t include WHO?
The first initial shock came when the Dallas Stars announced that they loaned preseason star Justin Hryckowian to their AHL team the Texas Stars. Hryckowian featured in the majority of the Dallas’ preseason fixtures, scoring a goal and assisting twice. He was also a general enforcer on the ice, which Dallas desperately needs. Robert Tiffin shared a great example of Hryckowian’s presence on the ice, stating “How do you know Justin Hryckowian is on the ice? This is how:”.
This shock was also compounded when 30 year old Adam Erne was not loaned to the Texas Stars. Fans in the comments were clammoring for Hryckowian over Erne. However, I’m inclined to trust 3x NHL GM of the year Jim Nill with this decision.
In addition to Hryckowian’s surprise, the Stars also moved fan favorite Lian Bichsel to the Texas Stars.
Personally, this decision shocked me. My immediate reaction was “what the hell”, then I did some digging. Thankfully, it turns out Jim Nill knows more than I do! Upon further research, Bichsel was likely moved to Texas because of cap reasons. The fan favorite is another enforcer that Dallas desperately needs on the ice. However, with the addition of superstars like Mikko Rantanen and the setback of Jamie Benn’s injury, the Stars must carefully navigate the constraints of the salary cap. Lian Bichsel’s move to the Texas Stars cleared up approximately $1,000,000 in cap space. Despite his movement to the AHL, we will absolutely see the enforcer in the regular season.
